Overview

The AMCS major is a liberal-arts-style course of study that allows for wide-ranging exploration of American culture. It features coursework in several disciplines (which ensures breadth of study), a Concentration (which allows for depth of study in a topic area), foundational courses in a single discipline or field, multidisciplinary fieldwork, and a culminating independent project. Click here for a concise list of the major requirements.

AMCS gives majors considerable freedom in defining this course of study, allowing them to develop an understanding of how cultural study is done in multiple fields and periods even as they define a Concentration and final project that suit their specific interests.

Pairing the AMCS major with a second major in a complementary discipline is an especially enriching model of cultural study, and AMCS will work closely with students to ensure that double-majoring works well. Click here for more on the AMCS double major.
